Panama, Central America
Fui a los trópicos (I went to the tropics).
I ventured overseas this time! I hadn’t been out of the country since I taught art in Costa Rica in 2017. I almost forgot how much I missed international travel, and especially the culture and nature of Central America; luckily Panama gave me a thorough refresher. I traveled by airplane to Panama City, took a 12 hour bus across the whole country, then finally a water taxi to get to Bocas del Toro, an island near the border of Costa Rica. One of my best friends is currently living there doing a Work-Away, where she is helping create a mosaic mural in exchange for lodging. She kept sending me beautiful pictures of the place so I had to go visit her! I got to help her out with the mosaic for a few days. Some of the sweetest moments on this trip were while working on it and the neighborhood kids would coming to help. We did art altogether in little teams, practiced Spanish & English with them, and made up games with the mosaic tiles. By the end they gave us giant hugs and smiles. Very wholesome content.
I spent 9 days in Panama, staying in nearby hostels, some on the main island and one on a beautiful jungle island called Red Frog. We had to take water taxis to get around, which is where many of the (good + not-great) stories from this trip come from. I got to do a tropical version of my ARTventures where I make no plans, but just explore (barefoot of course) with my sketchbook, seeing where the day takes me. I drew and wrote in jungles, from trees limbs, in the sand while observing the ocean’s strong riptide currents, after picking up trash on the beach, and at the hostel’s patio bar…there was so much life happening everywhere in Panama. The people, the plants, the water…everything seemed to be moving to a rhythm there, and I couldn’t help but move along with them all.
The colors of the landscapes here were mesmerizing…soft turquoise green waters, vivid green jungles, and animals of every color. Some of my favorite quiet moments were walking up the path to my hostel at night, seeing the deep blues of the tropical trees by moonlight, while listening to the animals chirping in the jungle. Throughout the week I got to closely see sloths, dolphins, tiny red frogs, parrots, monkeys, colorful fish & coral while snorkeling. Our group was even lucky enough to be informed of a nearby batch of baby turtles being born within the hour, and we hopped on our boat and made it in time to see 200 hundred tiny creatures crawl out of the sand to make their instinctive journeys in to the giant ocean.
A few pretty stressful things happened on this trip too, from ATM/debit card not working, to missing buses, getting ripped off from a fake reservation, to being totally separated from my friends on a tour…etc. But it gave me the chance to practice handling stress, and also let me see how powerful kindness and help from strangers and new friends can be. I saw a lot, and learned a lot, as per usual when traveling. And that’s why I love it- I can always count on returning stronger, with new perspectives. That spirit will carry through into my art and daily life now upon my return, making this next phase even more exciting.
I kept the art simple this time as I traveled lightly and have been in the process of moving houses back in Oklahoma. I have returned now to my new place in Sand Springs, and am setting up the studio, which is surrounded by lots of nature thankfully. I don’t have any major trips set in stone for now, but already thinking of how I can continue cultivating this balance of home & travel in my life. For now, the adventures will be local and I will be exploring far away things in my paintings.
May we all find ways to EXPLORE (bravely be open, follow the mystery) + CONNECT (share love with ourselves, others & nature) each day.
Best wishes all!

My friend Regan working on the mosaic mural that me and the local kiddos got to help her with. Most used phrase- “Un momento por favor” , “One moment please”. We would say it when the kids would get too excited and moved so quickly with the tiles, then they would laugh and slowly say “One. Moment. PLEASE.” This became the joke of the week.
A bit blurry as this is a still from a video…but even so I think you can tell how much fun we were having, these chicas were so good at finding the perfect shapes and were so helpful in the process. Felt good to be Miss Liz for a bit on this trip :)
First ARTventure of the trip…found the most beautiful tree to climb overlooking the ocean…No matter where you are, it’s always a good day when you can climb a tree! Try it and tell me if I’m wrong. ;)

Boat tour Zapatilla Island, Bocas del Toro, Panama
Hiking barefoot, separated from my friends, drinking from coconuts with the tour guide, then exploring the island solo, such a confusing but beautiful day! Traveling will always have those ups & downs, but you’ll get stories regardless.

I made many new friends, both locals and other travelers from all over the world at this hostel. And we all played a lot of pool here, was an important part of the trip to capture. Selina by the Sea Hostel, Bocas tel Toro, Panama
Painting on the bar patio during the rain. The best part of this view was that you could jump right into the waters…then order a mojito. Selina by the Sea Hostel, Bocas tel Toro, Panama.
The baby sea turtles born and making their way into the world! One of the best traveling experiences I have so far.
Mi amiga mejor de Oklahoma, Regan (My best friend from Oklahoma, Regan). She is the one I came to visit here. I’m so grateful for the connection and opportunity to see Bocas because of her!
